We started with a simple defense against a choke and how to use the locking and unlocking motion of our spine to break the grip and posture of your opponent. We do it two ways: once with pure muscle and once with only the Qi. Almost without fail, anytime we used strictly our muscles the smaller person would lose. But once a little Qi was applied, even the strongest grips were broken. This demonstrates the power of using the entire body. This is a good example of "you won't believe it until you feel it."
Using your opponent's energy is a common saying in a lot of styles so deductive reasoning will tell you that it is probably a good concept to know. We're happy our system is based completely on first developing your internal energy and then how to transfer it for your benefit. After practicing how to break grips, we added another step by practicing how to push your opponent off you. Seemed like everyone enjoyed seeing how easy it can be when done right. After that, we added the counter to the push. There should always be a counter to most techniques in order to complete the circle of knowledge.
Some keys to success:
1. Understanding posture and when to be straight and when to bend
2. Relaxing your body and knowing when to tense up at the right moment
3. Sink (get rooted), Swallow (absorb and bend) and Spit (fire back)
